Director of Public Works
Public Works Director Nature of Work: Administrative and technical work in directing and supervising the city’s Public Works operations. Work involves the responsibility for overseeing all phases of municipal public works, including storm sewers, fleet maintenance, public municipal facilities, and road maintenance. The Director in this department requires excellent communication & leadership skills, project management, financial management, problem solving, analytical thinking and strategic planning. This position exercises supervision over several unskilled, semi-skilled, and supervisory maintenance and construction employees.
Responsibilities Include: Directing the activities of the city’s equipment, building maintenance programs, and solid waste disposal programs. Direct and oversee drinking water and water distribution, wastewater system and sewer maintenance, construction programs, and other municipality owned facilities. Researching and implementing improvements to the operation of the departments in his/her charge.
The Director will handle complaints from the public as received by phone or directly in person as well as implementation of and adherence to procedures and department personnel functions to also include establishing and maintaining appropriate work relationships with municipal officials, peers, and supporting personnel State and local organizations. Day to day operations is performed under guidelines established by the Mayor and Board of Aldermen; however, the Director must also exercise considerable independent judgment and technical expertise to meet department objectives.
This position will administer the department’s employment contracts, confer with the department employees about the development and progress of various projects. Give general supervision to the repair and maintenance of all motorized equipment, work with contracted professional engineers in designing and implementing projects, and other duties as assigned. Attendance at monthly meetings is required.
Requirements of Work: High School Diploma or GED, Successful completion of a background check, Valid Driver's License with clean driving record, Ability to obtain required certifications, knowledge of construction methods, materials, and equipment as applied in municipal public works, working knowledge of finance and budgeting, as well as the ability to organize, direct, and coordinate the activities of the Public Works Department, including long-term planning.
This is a Full-Time Salary position with a benefit package that includes Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance and Lagers Retirement as well as PTO & Vacation. Salary dependent upon qualifications.
